Guest Author Series ~ An Interview with Alexandria Infante

Today Paranormal Romance and Beyond is pleased to welcome the beautiful and talented Alexandria Infante. She's a writer of IR/MC PNR. So sit back, relax, and let's get to know more about Alexandria and her books.

The Interview
Where are you from? Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m from California, born and raised, however I have traveled a bit in my life. I started out as a chef, and held onto that career for 15-years, but I knew it was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Not to mention I developed bursitis in my right shoulder.  I have a master’s in English Literature/Art History; with a Minor in Mythology and History. I am a Professor of English Literature & Art History.

I has five amazing children; Matthew 26, Blazhia 24, Soleil 21, Micah 17 and Sora 11. Matthew, Blazhia and Soleil are in college; so I spend most of my time with Micah and Sora when I’m not writing. I’ve always loved vampires, werewolves, witches, and the things that go bump in the night; and it just rocks my boat to be able to write about them.

What made you want to be an author?
I love Paranormal, Contemporary, and Historical Romance, but I didn’t see myself reflected in the works that I read.  If I did, it was a side character, a supporting character, or a villain; so I thought I’d write my own. Being multi-racial (Puerto Rican, Cuban, Native American, Irish and African-American) I wanted to see a character like me, and the fact that this is rare spurred me on. Authors like me (Interracial Romance, or what more commonly known as IR authors) tend to get pigeon holed into one specific genre like Minority literature, Latina, African-American, or Ethnic, who hardly ever move out of that; and I think this is completely unfair.

I hoped by writing what I believe the genre should encompass, people would see the book for the story and negate the race of the character; that being, anyone could place themselves in the shoes of the character, not just someone of a minority background.

What do you like best about being a writer? What do you like the least?
The fact that I get to pull my readers into my own little world and with any luck entertain them enough to keep them there. I love what I do. Finding the myths and incorporating them into the story line is so much fun for me; because it challenges me to come up with even more detail, weaving it into the story just right so it makes sense.

Least; I would say the review process lol. It took me a while to get used to that aspect, and to understand that not everyone will like what you write. As well, being measure up to this person, or evaluated against this or that work; instead of it just being about the character and the stories you write. How people seem to predispose what we imagine people to be, and not letting someone’s work speak for itself.  I used to have an issue with reviews, but once I stepped back and looked at them for what they were; there was some pretty good advice in them. I’m not so much afraid of the black void where my work gets rejected over and over again. I’m more afraid of reviewers who have no clue what I’m writing, stepping into the character, and walking outside of what they perceive is normal.

As for writing, unfortunately, life gets in the way sometimes and I don’t get to write consecutively for weeks on end like I would love to. I truly wish I could do this and only this! Writers block, lol and sometimes forcing myself to write even when I don’t feel like it.

Are you a plotter or a pantser, i.e., do you outline your books ahead of time or are you an “organic” writer?
I never plan anything lol. I'm sure I'm prejudiced by plenty of things though lol. I discover brainwaves in songs, movies, the world at large, or just simple phrases sometimes. I love to write at Starbucks, because the bustling people always inspire me. The nasty woman impatiently yelling at the Starbuck`s employee because she gave her a mocha coffee instead of a mocha latté, becomes a villain. The Hugh Jackman look alike becomes the next wolf, or the sexy emo guy ordering the Eggnog latte`  may become the next Master of the city for my vamps. The hot blonde ordering the Tazo berry tea becomes the next warlock; and the tiny brunette might actually become the next main female character.

I love to write at night, especially since I write paranormal. Rainy nights are good for scenes of action, but full moon nights always seem to give me the most creativity.  People in general instigate me to create something new. I base both my Paranormal and Fae series on mythology, so I’m constantly inspired by a new myth, new legends, or new facts about lost artifacts; and I incorporate them into my books.

What influences your writing? And why?
This is wide lol.

I read a wide range of works from fiction to non-fiction; so I couldn’t narrow that down to one specific author. I would say Shakespeare is one of my favorites though, because I was always in love with how he told a story within a story. I wanted to be able to weave a tale just as he did. I know most people find him boring, but if they take in the works as a whole they would see the nitty gritty as they say; the sex, betrayal, murder and all the juicy stuff that we read today.

Name one thing readers don’t know about you.
I’m a book geek to the fullest! When I was a kid if ever my amà was looking for me all she had to do was check the closet, or under the bed; and there I was reading a book.

Are love scenes easy/difficult for you to write?
Actually, I find these very easy to write. I know what I like, and what I want out of a relationship, and I pretty much adapt it to the character I’m writing to make it her own.

Do you have another career besides writing? What is it?
Yes I do, and I love it as well. I teach Literature and Art History; my second love. I love the fact that I am able to delve into the past, and make it come alive for my students. I love to teach the tidbits of the time-period, the things that they would have never learned in high school.

What hobbies do you enjoy when not writing?
As boring as it sounds, antiquing. Going away for the weekend to some place like Santa Barbra, and just searching for antique finds. I once found an encyclopedia from 1814, inscribed to a little girl named Amelia. I love comic books, so any movie that affiliated with them, I am so there. Of course museums, I salivate over new exhibits, especially anything that has to do with Egypt. Well of course Mythology lol. I find new myths, and I automatically think on how I can incorporate them into what I write. Nevertheless, I still love to cook, and in book 2, the main female character was a chef who lost her restaurant because one of L.A’s finest got food poisoning, but her ex-boyfriend set her up for sabotage. The fact that at one point in my father’s life he was a martial arts instructor and taught me, helps with the fighting scenes in my books; and my love of history and mythology is clear in each of the books that I write.

If you could be any supernatural creature, what would it be and why?
Ohhh, hummm, let’s see. I would take Arieanna’s, my main female character from the Teaching Between Midnight & Dawn series. It can’t be defined just yet, so it is just pure power from the source, so she has no limited capacity.

If you had one take away piece of advice for authors, what would it be?
No matter how many dirty rotten rejections you get, keep believing in yourself. ET was rejected 35 times, can you imagine that dude’s face when it hit the next stratosphere in the 80s. Lol, I bet he’s still dazed and confused by that to this day lol.

Do you have any future projects that we can look for?
Yes lol.
My next Historical Romance is called Shards of Grey, and will be out in July.
My next Contemporary Romance is the next installment of Grave Reviews.
The paranormals; Teaching Between Midnight & Dawn; book 12 Hidden Shadows.
A Lite Farie Tale series book 4; Gata; Daughters of Lite.

Tell us more about T.B.M.D; Arieanna’s Legend.
I loved writing this book.

My love for mythology sparked this series, and each book gets darker. I could say I see myself in the character of Arieanna, and I thought why not make a book where regular everyday teachers fought against the things that go bump in the night. You always see the detective, ex-cop or private detective, but never the regular person minding their own business; so I thought it would be fun to throw a bunch of teachers and professors in the mix. Arieanna holds my heart, because she was the first character concept that I came up with. I wanted to show that love has no genre, race, creed or species lol. I believe the book is both sexy and romantic, because you can feel the intensity between Auron and Arieanna. The love is expressed, because Auron will do whatever he has to do to protect Arieanna, and vise versa. The first book in the series is a bit tamed compared to the other 12. Each book in the series gets just a bit darker, more sensual, and the erotic element is played up even more.

Do you have an excerpt for us?
Yes, lol.

Arieanna was pretty much happy with her life. Her students loved her, she loved teaching; life was simple and uncomplicated.
That's until she met Auron.
Sent by an exclusive underground sect Auron's there to protect the descendant of Asť at all cost. His number one purpose is to keep the supposed volume of Asť's magick from entering the hands of the wrong people; in spite of the fact that it might cause his death.
Exiled nearly two centuries ago from his Företag for insubordination and murder, Auron knows if Jimmy Mann gets his hands on that book all hell will break lose.
Centuries of war will spill onto a human battleground, the causalities catastrophic.
The governing Council will do whatever it deems necessary to keep that from happening; even if it means taking out the descendant, Lycans, Warlocks, Witches, Shape-shifters and Vampires alike.
The hieroglyphs state she holds the key to the location of Asť's legendary book of magick; the only problem is…Arieanna doesn't know it yet!
